Built Around the Customer’s Track

The customer’s mine runs on ultra-narrow track, sized for small drifts and light mine cars and narrower than the common gauges for this model. Re-laying the rails would be costly and would interrupt production, so we built the locomotives to the gauge the mine already uses.

Changing the gauge is more than moving the wheels. The wheelsets, axle length, frame width and brake rigging were reworked so the locomotive stays stable on the narrow track and still clears the drift walls. The result is a compact battery mining locomotive that couples to the customer’s existing mine cars, handles the tight curves of a small mine and can go to work without changes to the haulage system.

Why Lithium Instead of Lead-Acid

The platform is offered with either lead-acid or lithium batteries. For this underground mining locomotive the customer chose lithium, for reasons that matter in daily operation:

  • Less maintenance. There is no electrolyte to top up and no acid to handle in the charging bay.
  • Shorter charging time. The locomotive spends less time on charge between shifts and can be topped up during breaks without harming the battery.
  • Longer cycle lifeunder the deep daily discharge typical of rail haulage.
  • Built-in protection. The battery management system monitors cell voltage and temperature and prevents over-charge and over-discharge.

For a small mine that runs only a few locomotives, these points add up to more working hours per locomotive each day.

Packing and Loading

Each locomotive was wrapped in several layers of stretch film covering the cab, the controls and the battery compartment, to keep out dust and moisture on the long trip to Africa. The KA plates on the bodies show that the locomotives carry the safety mark for equipment used in non-coal mines.

The spare traction motors were packed with the order so the mine has replacements on site. Each motor carries its own KA nameplate, and the shaft ends were wrapped before shipment.

Spare gears, drive shafts and brake parts were bagged one by one and packed into a divided plywood crate, with the heavy gears kept apart from the shafts, then strapped shut.

Locomotives and crates were then loaded together onto the truck. Every crate carries a numbered HNYT label, so the customer can check each package against the packing list on arrival. Smaller cases were packed tightly around the locomotives to stop the load from shifting on the road.
